Dealership Wash Bay SOP

Dealership Wash Bay SOP: A Practical Process for Consistent Results, Compliance, and Efficiency

Most wash bay problems are not caused by employees.

They are caused by inconsistent processes.

When every technician washes vehicles differently, results vary, rework increases, chemical costs rise, and customer satisfaction suffers.

The goal of a dealership wash process should be simple:

  • Protect vehicle surfaces
  • Improve consistency
  • Reduce rework
  • Control chemical costs
  • Improve employee training
  • Maintain safety compliance

The following dealership wash bay standards provide a practical framework that can be adapted to dealerships, recon centers, rental fleets, and automotive service operations.

Wash Bay Standards

Bucket Requirements

A minimum of three buckets shall be maintained:

  • Wash Bucket
  • Rinse Bucket
  • Wheel & Tire Bucket

Buckets shall remain dedicated to their intended purpose and shall be clearly identified. You can see my Two Bucket Wash Setup article for additional details.

Microfiber Standards

Separate microfiber towels shall be maintained for:

  • Glass
  • Interior Cleaning
  • Exterior/Paint
  • Tire Dressing
  • Drying

Wheel, tire, engine bay, and heavily contaminated towels shall never be used on painted surfaces.

Chemical Safety Requirements

All secondary containers shall contain OSHA-compliant labels identifying:

  • Product Name
  • Primary Hazards
  • Required Safety Information
  • All PPE Guidelines established by dealership, SDS, IDA, OSHA and alike followed.

QR codes linking to current Safety Data Sheets (SDS) should be placed in wash bays, detail departments, and chemical storage locations where employees can easily access them.

Employees should have immediate access to SDS information whenever chemicals are being used.

Vehicle Inspection

Prior to washing:

Inspect vehicle for:

  • Existing scratches
  • Paint damage
  • Dents
  • Broken trim
  • Missing components
  • Windshield chips
  • Excessive contamination

Existing damage should be documented and reported before work begins.

Standard Exterior Wash Process

Step 1: Pre-Treatment

Apply bug remover to affected areas.

Apply wheel and tire cleaner to wheels and tires.

Apply approved pre-soak to vehicle surfaces.

Examples may include:

  • Frost Bite
  • Super Pre-Soak
  • Other dealership-approved pre-wash products

Allow products to dwell according to manufacturer recommendations.

Do not allow chemicals to dry on vehicle surfaces.

Step 2: Agitation

Agitate bug-contaminated areas as needed.

Agitate wheels and tires as needed using designated wheel and tire tools.

Wheel and tire tools shall never be used on painted surfaces.

Step 3: Pre-Rinse

Thoroughly rinse vehicle from top to bottom.

Pay special attention to:

  • Wheel wells
  • Lower rocker panels
  • Front bumper
  • Grilles
  • Heavy contamination areas

The objective is to remove as much contamination as possible before touching the paint.

Step 4: Wheel and Tire Evaluation

Inspect wheels and tires after rinsing.

If contamination remains, repeat wheel and tire cleaning procedures as necessary.

Excessive brake dust, embedded contamination, or heavy fallout may require escalation to decontamination procedures and should not automatically be included in a standard wash process.

Step 5: Contact Wash

Wash vehicle from top down using approved wash media.

Frequently rinse wash media in the rinse bucket before returning to the wash bucket.

Lower panels and heavily contaminated areas should be washed last.

Step 6: Final Rinse

Perform a thorough final rinse from top to bottom.

Inspect vehicle for remaining contamination.

Repeat cleaning steps only when necessary.

Drying Procedure

Dry vehicle using approved drying towels or forced-air equipment.

Special attention should be given to:

  • Mirrors
  • Door handles
  • Fuel doors
  • Emblems
  • Grilles
  • Body seams

Standing water should be removed whenever possible.

Glass Cleaning Procedures

Interior Glass

Apply glass cleaner to a microfiber towel or applicator.

Do not spray directly toward:

  • Screens
  • Electronics
  • Switches
  • Instrument panels
  • Vents

Clean interior glass using a vertical wiping pattern.

Exterior Glass

Apply glass cleaner to an applicator, microfiber towel, or approved sandwich sponge.

Clean exterior glass using a horizontal wiping pattern.

Using opposite wipe directions helps quickly identify the source of any remaining streaks.

Interior Surface Cleaning Standards

Interior cleaners should be applied to:

  • Scrub Ninja
  • Microfiber towel
  • Interior scrub pad
  • Approved applicator

Cleaners should not be sprayed directly onto dashboards, screens, instrument clusters, or plastic trim unless specifically directed by product instructions. An interior detailing SOP for dealerships will be added shortly.

Tire Dressing

Apply dressing evenly using an approved applicator.

Remove excess product.

Vehicles should not be released with visible dressing buildup or sling risk.

Final Quality Control Inspection

Prior to vehicle release verify:

✓ Glass is streak free

✓ No chemical residue remains

✓ No standing water remains in visible areas

✓ No excessive tire dressing remains

✓ No tools or towels remain in vehicle

✓ Doors, hood, trunk, windows, and fuel door are secured

✓ Vehicle appearance meets dealership standards

Why SOPs Matter

The best dealerships do not rely on memory.

They rely on systems.

A documented wash process improves consistency, simplifies training, reduces chemical waste, minimizes damage, improves safety compliance, and helps ensure every customer receives the same level of service regardless of who washed the vehicle.

The objective is not perfection.

The objective is repeatable excellence.
